The best books to read in Years 7, 8 and 9

The 'Inkheart' series

author: Cornelia Funke

These books are great for all Key Stage 3 students and consist of numerous genres: fantasy and adventure being most prominent among them. I really enjoyed these books because although they are like 'Lord of the Rings' they have their own twist and you can get completely lost in a whole new world filled with all manner of creatures and oddities.

Magnus Chase

author: Rick Riordan

If you enjoyed 'Percy Jackson', or other books like those, you will love these. 'Magnus Chase' is the Norse God’s version of Percy and he goes on amazing adventures with his friends and roommates from Valhalla. These are best for years 7 and 8 and are about old-style gods but with a modern twist.

Spooks Apprentice

author: Joseph Delaney

This is the first book in the Spooks series. Tom is used to a relaxed life working with his 6 brothers on the farm but when suddenly the Spook arrives and claims him as his apprentice Tom’s life is about to change forever…

Rangers Apprentice

author: John Flanagan

'Rangers Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan' kicks off the thrilling series in which Will, an apprentice Ranger (Rangers are an elite force of fighters trained to protect the kingdom) goes on a series of adventures and gets involved in many sticky situations and somehow finds a way out of all of them.

Inheritance series

author: Christopher Paolini

This amazing and exciting series is about this ordinary farm boy who finds some strange stone in a forest and picks it up. From then on, nothing is the same. He goes through many dangers, and faces death infinite times, but he also finds love and makes many new friends along the way. He even meets people from other races, and even battles those who then become one of their greatest allies, and his entire journey is to do one thing; kill the evil still lingering in his world of Alagaesia.
