One of the best books you'll ever read: David Eddings’ The Belgariad

David Eddings’ The Belgariad is a beautifully written classic evolving around the two destinies of Dark and Light. A long journey that takes not only the characters but the readers with them on thrilling events with royalty, sorcery and monsters. Every single chapter is worth reading as we follow the struggle towards the meeting of the Light and Dark destinies.

A simple, practical farm boy, raised by his aunt, is suddenly ripped away from his home and brought on a journey that takes him into the court of kings, fights he doesn’t know the purpose of and places he’d never been before. Along the way, there seems to be much more to his companions than meets the eye. The thrilling journey is written by the most detailed and effective writing, making the most out of every line and sentence.

When reading the book, the reader is very much involved, and it’s like you’re actually there. The characters are so well mapped-out and understood, while also keeping a very exciting amount of mystery. At first, unfortunately, the book seems quite typical and, frankly, uneventful, until an uninvited visitor comes up. David Eddings not once forgets a single aspect of what he’s written. Characters that have been long forgotten can spring up at any time, putting a realistic depth into the story, making it that much more life-like. From a personal point of view, the story transports you into a world where you’d rather be, in some ways, an escape.

The series is split up into five books, followed by two sub-books and another five-book series. In the first series, The Belgariad, these are the book titles (for recommendation):

  1. Pawn of Prophecy

  2. Queen of Sorcery

  3. Magician’s Gambit

  4. Castle of Wizardry

  5. Enchanter’s End Game

The two sub-books are; Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. For the second follow-up series, named The Malloreon, the five book titles are:

  1. Guardians of the West

  2. King of the Murgos

  3. Demon Lord of Karanda

  4. Sorceress of Darshiva

  5. The Seeress of Kell

In hopes that you take this recommendation, I assure you that you’ll read one of the best classic novels in history. Some may be intimidated by the sheer number of books, but if you take up this series, you’ll be glad that there are so many. Filling endless hours with endless entertainment and dramatic tales beyond belief - and reality.
