Cricket at BISB
For the past two and a half years there have been a small handful of ambitious students who have been playing the popular sport named cricket at BISB.
What is cricket you may be asking yourself? You may be thinking that cricket is basically the same as baseball, softball or rounders, and you are ri
ght if you think of all three as just a field filled with players and a person with a bat hitting a ball. But cricket is a bit different to the other games.
The action starts when the bowler (thrower/pitcher) bowls the ball with a full straight extended arm. If the batsman misses and it hits the wickets, which consists of three wooden sticks (stumps), then he’s out. But if the ball misses wickets then he/she score 0 runs (points). But if the batsman hits then depending on how far the ball goes, you can score anywhere between 1 to 6 runs. Or depending on the way you play, you could also earn runs if the two batsmen swap places without getting runout (a runout is when the ball hits either of the stumps before the batsman runs past a certain point). The batsman can also get out if the ball gets caught by the fielders without touching the floor. The bowling team bowls for a certain number of overs, there are 6 bowls in each over, and once they finish the teams switch roles and the previously batting team now bowls. By the end, the team which has scored the most runs wins the match.
Cricket is not like the other games it is much more complicated...
Proven by: LBWs, Stumpings, byes, leg byes, silly point, cow corner, fast, spin, swing, T20, test, ODIs, sitters, ducks, peaches and sledging. Enough with random funny terms, if you have some basic knowledge you may think of the game as being pretty boring: Considering that a single game can last for 5 days.
But it can be really action packed, especially T20, which has twenty overs bowled per team. It is a much shorter version of the game, only 3 hours long. Many countries enjoy it, such as Australia, India and England. The industry is growing and is made up of many segments: the world cup T20 & ODI, equipment companies making bats, balls, helmets, gloves, pads and other accessories. There are many companies which only make cricket items. The most notable are: Kookaburra, GM, SG and Gray-Nicolls.
The T20 industry is booming with the IPL, Big Bash, CPL and the Vitality Blast. There are some theories that the rise of T20 is killing test cricket, but that’s a totally different story.
For me the best part about cricket is the thrilling atmosphere that is made at the crease. When standing at the strikers end with my heart pounding, adrenaline flowing through my arteries and the ball racing towards me, all I can do is swing the bat. As the center of the willow hits leather, a sound ever so sweet echoes through the ground. The ball flies, never stopping until the boundary - going for a six.
