Dear Flat-Earthers,

I would like to respond to your flat-earth theories. I believe that the Earth is spherical because of the pieces of irrefutable evidence we have had for years about this topic.

Firstly, I believe the Earth isn’t flat because it is scientifically proven that gravity is approximately uniform all around the globe. If the Earth was flat, gravity wouldn’t work in the way you know it. The gravitational pull of the Earth comes from the core of the Earth and it is what forms the Earth into a sphere. If the Earth was flat and there was a pull from the center of the Earth, then all water would be gathered near the center. When you would be further away from the center of a flat earth, the gravitational pull would be almost horizontal, which isn’t anything like what we experience in day-to-day life.

Secondly, the spherical Earth model best explains phenomena such as night and day and the seasons. Your model doesn’t explain either. As the Earth orbits around the Sun during the year, a part of it is in more direct contact with sunlight than the other, creating summer. In July, the Northern hemisphere is in more direct contact with sunlight, while the southern doesn’t have as direct contact with sunlight, explaining why you will inevitably find there are lower temperatures. The spherical Earth model also explains how the Earth has night and day because it rotates around its axis. In a flat Earth model, there is no unified theory that would be able to explain the seasons and night and day, which is why evidence suggests the Earth is not flat.

Thirdly, we have flights that go from Asia to North America in less than 14 hours. If the Earth was flat, these flights would take much longer. Circumnavigation is also possible; you can travel around the world. If the Earth was flat, then this wouldn’t be possible.

The model you use is a projection of the Earth as you would see it from the top. The further you get to the outer rings of the Earth, the more distorted the picture is. If you tried to take the same distances in your projection, they would be much, much longer. In conclusion, your model doesn’t truly have an absolute scale.

Lastly, if the world was flat, you would be able to see to the ends of the world. However, the earth is spherical, so we can see that there is always a horizon and the higher you go the more you can see as the Earth is curved. Let's use a ship that travels to the horizon as an example. After a period of time, you will see it starts to appear sinking, when really, this is because of the Earth’s curvature that the ship disappears over the horizon.

In conclusion, I hope that the various pieces of evidence I have provided have convinced you of the truth. Stop spreading misinformation. Conspiracies such as the flat earth may seem harmless, however ultimately, it is the source of every other conspiracy theory. This type of thinking can lead to very damaging conspiracy theories such as the anti-vaxxer movement, believing COVID is a hoax etc., which can put not only your life at risk, but the life of your family and friends.
