How Games impact the World

Nowadays, more and more people are becoming familiar with videogames. Many videogames now have rich background stories and game cultures. Games have become a culture of experience, as many games have a complete world view to support the storyline in order to create a smooth flow of events. Such games include Genshin Impact, Her Story, Bio Shock etc. These videogames have their unique worldviews that allow players to see a different perspective to their own. Yet, many people still think games are unhealthy and a waste of time.

Negative impacts

A majority of people think that video games are a harmful, addictive, and meaningless activity that wastes your time - something that will negatively affect your education as a student. The survey “Leading opinions about video gaming among parents in the US in 2019” shows that 55% of people think games make children behave badly and in “Most parents think their teens spend too much time playing video games” by Susan Perry it is mentioned that 9 in 10 of parents think that their children spent too much time on games, also they think games can effect children’s sleep, schoolwork, friendships and family activities.

Furthermore, parents reported that games can affect children’s mood negatively when they lose a match or are unable to get what they want within the game. Clearly, games bring so much negative impact on us. Moreover, some games contain violent content, which will make children become violent or scared after playing it as their worldviews are not mature yet. If it is more serious, it will make the child afraid or fear the game in the future.

Furthermore, playing a lot of games will make you disconnected from the real world. Being immersed in the game for a long time will make you have no time to go out and socialize, resulting in disconnection from your friends and family. Long-term this will lead to social problems and make you unable to take care of yourself. It may also cause depression (if it's very serious, for example, if you keep losing matches and teammates blame you, you might feel unconfident and doubt yourself). Additionally, using electronic products for a long time is the main cause of vision loss, and it can lead to weight gain with prolonged sitting. In conclusion, parents have bias on video games due to many negative impacts on children.

Positive Impacts

However, in reality, video games aren't only negative they also have many positive impacts. There are many pressures in life (such as schoolwork, relationship, problems about future etc.). When you have nowhere to release this pressure, you can try to play games to relieve some of your current pressure and play. The game can make you have fun for the short-term. In this way, you can temporarily forget the pressure of life, and proper games will make life more interesting.

Playing games can improve cognitive abilities. Sometimes different games have different world views and settings. Playing these games can help people improve their cognitive abilities and realize the diversity of the world. Games with a unique world view such as: Genshin Impact (my favourite game :P), Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild, Minecraft, Metal Gear Solid 5 etc... In summary, these games have different, captivating world setting and unique rules. Games that can improve cognitive-enforcing traits are chess, the 7th guess, Hidden Folks etc. These games can improve your skills and benefit you. Which as a result means it’s is not really a bad thing to enjoy games. In fact, the positives of games are much more significant than the negatives. There are many benefits to playing games, for example, strategy games will make people smarter, and proper entertainment will make people relax. Or the ability to resist setbacks. For example, children will not give up once they lose the game but instead, they will redo it again from the beginning, with this emotional resilience helping the child in many situations in the future. There are also customs clearance-tired games that can encourage children. For example, whenever the game is cleared, the system will give rewards and encouragement. These are all good for the future of the child.

As a result, the survey from Statista about parents’ opinion on games shows 87% of people think game education (Minecraft) can bring benefit to children. Overall, times are changing, and from this evidence we know more and more people, especially parents, think that games can bring benefits to their children, and they are trying to accept things that’s unknown these days, which also shows the changing of the world.
