The Gaming Timeline
1950s: Tennis for Two We now use aluminum controllers.
For a long time, it was the most popular game, especially during the 1950s. But now, it’s very boring. The game was interesting and easy to control. Only screens and controllers. It’s literally tennis, but without the racket. The ground was there, and we could now use it to hit the ball. The bad bit was that the computer took up too much space.Nowadays, we can easily have such a game on our phones, but times were different back then.
1960s: Space War! And the Dawn of the Home Console
We can use joysticks, almost the same as now. The rules were that we have two spaceships each, and we have to destroy the enemy’s spaceship. The game has a strange shape and is already hard to find nowadays. This game was also hard to carry.
1970s: Space Invaders, Nintendo, and Donkey Kong
They were the best arcade game made in Japan and widely considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Fixed shooter was the genre of the time, so we could only shoot in one direction.
1980s: Near-Death of Videogames, but People Started Playing Super Mario and Legends of Zelda
We can all use the Nintendo controller. You know, the black one. The setting of The Legends of Zelda is Hyrule Island, and the main characters are Link and Zelda. Zelda is taken away by Ganon, and the aim is to rescue Zelda and kill Ganon. But it takes six months to finish the story. The most famous versions are Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Legends of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This version of Breath of the Wild is adventurous and a little bit scary. Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is about Link, the great soldier of Hyrule, but unfortunately, Link’s memory has disappeared and he has slept for a hundred years. And while he was asleep, he heard Zelda’s voice and woke up. But until he can’t escape from the ‘land of beginning’. It’s just the tutorial. Link has to fight with the monster ‘Red Bokoblin’, and arrive at the hidden top of the tower. Before that, Link will get a key card, and if we don’t have that key card, the story can’t start. Then, at that hidden top, we need to use that key card. When you arrive, many portals will appear, showing a bunch of other towers in different towns. Suddenly, a grandfather will appear and ask, "Do you want to go to that castle to kill Ganon?" And Link says yes. But that ‘Land of Beginnings’ is so high off the ground that we need a ‘Parasail’. This may be the second-most important thing. But that grandfather doesn’t give you parasail. As such, you have to go and collect treasure. And he points to the shrine. If you want to go in, you need a key card. Then they give a superpower. The power is psychokinesis. It’s to get that key card. After that, we need to clear the shrine puzzle using psychokinesis. Finally, we can get the treasure. But that grandfather broke his promise! He said, “The shrine is here around the Land of Beginnings. If you find that treasure, then I will give you the parasail.” The second shrine is very hard to get into. Because the Guardian will protect that shrine. (Guardian is the soldier robot for Hyrule, but Ganon gave him the power of evil, so it’s an enemy.) It shoots its laser. But the puzzle on the inside is easy, and it gives a superpower with bombs. The third shrine gives me the power of stopping time. The fourth shrine gives the power of making ice ladders in the water. That means we can now clear all four shrines and get the parasail. The old man will tell you a very shocking story. He was the king of Hyrule! And if we get the four treasures, then we can increase our strength or stamina. (Link has three strength) and if we pray to some statue, then our strength increases by one or our stamina increases by 1/4 s. However, there’s actually 116 shrines left in this land. After that, we have to clear four divine beasts. There is a water beast, a fire beast, a wind beast, and an electric beast. If we clear each of the divine beasts, we will learn their stories, which are very sad. The water beast is in Water Town, the fire beast is in Lava Town, the wind beast is in Snow Town, and the electric beast is in the desert. We usually clear water first, fire second, wind third, and electricity last. The sad history of each town is important because people died while they fought with Ganon. They appeared and disappeared like ghosts. The power of water is resurrection, in addition to giving extra strength. The power of fire is to defend when Link holds the shield then that power becomes ready and it’s useful for when monsters hit, usually we will dodge but if we can’t, that power will defend against that attack. The power of wind is to produce an updraft. If we press the ‘X’ button, we can draft up. No need to climb. The power of electricity is an electric attack. When we use a strong attack, the stamina will be decreased (Stamina will increase again when Link is done with that attack). After that, Ganon is killed. End of story. The bad bits are too long, so I’ve left them out.
1990s: Sonic, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter, People Started to Play 3D Games
In Sonic, we can control the character using the joystick, we can fight, team, race, or do something else. The games were in 2D, and the screen keeps moving as the player moves Sonic. The bad bit is that a long time ago, the screen quality was a bit low, and moving was unnatural. 2000s: Xbox, Microsoft, Modern Games as We Know Them As we know, we can play games on the phone very easily. Nowadays, we can control the phone and the computer with better joysticks. The quality is also better. In my opinion, the most famous game is ‘brawl stars’. It also had a big crash in popularity because it was just so boring doing things again and again. Why brawl stars has suddenly become so famous is because they made a lot of new events, new characters, new abilities.
